Its depend upon your business, what type of business you have. However you can use banners or promotional products to promote your business. Using banners you can get more attentions. promotional products like pens, T-shirts, coffee cup, calendar printing is also a powerful advertising tools. Thanks, J

Word of mouth is huge! You'll find your friends and family will be proud to know someone that owns their own business and if you explain in detail what you do and how you would love referrals they will be more than happy to help you.

The sames goes for your first few customers/clients - ask for a testimonial - post that on your website or ask them to refer you in the future -remember if you don't ask you won't get. If you have done a great job for them then you can be a little bit cheeky and ask for referrals.

Use every opportunity to promote your business to people you meet - if your in a store that stocks a similar product to yours- go and speak to the owner - it comes across better than a sales call.

Make posters and post them in your local Starbucks etc.

I like to tell you my experience on promoting a business. However you haven't mentioned about your business, I share about my web business. I bought a plan from a reseller called www.goresellers.com. A plan in their dictionary is nothing but a website, dealing with domain name registration and all services related to the web business.  All we need to get customers to our site. The required service to our customer will be done by the reseller and we get commission from the reseller. In this business I did all type of online marketing and getting a reasonable revenue.

Online and offline stratergies both are essential for targeting your audience.
