Is there a program for Senior Citizens who have a low income?

My husband was killed instantly in a one car rollover Oct 17, 2008. He was my soul provider, and I would make sure that all the bills were paid on time. Our credit was pretty good when he was alive. Well since I am on disability, I had to pay the bills when I could. We were starting to settle down in our home, and had been there from Oct 2, 2006, until he was killed on Oct 17, 2008. Now my credit is down in the 300's and I am trying my best to get bills paid, but it just seems like a long process, and I don't know what to do. Can you give me some advice? Thank You Jeanine Willner

You sound like you qualify to have your mortgage renegotiated or modified with your lender. This would help you significantly. In order to find out if you qualify, please call 1-800-557-1467 Ext 4. This is an A+ Accredited Loan Modification Company. Be careful, because, not all loan modification companies are legitimate. You could put yourself in an even worse situation because most of the loan modification companies don't really care and will take your money even if you are denied. I am sorry for our state of affairs as well as the loss of your love and provider. Take care.

Here are a few things to do right away:

1. check with your city and county for low-income assistance programs

2.  keep paying your mortgage - you dont want to lose your house.  Read my article on what to do if you cant pay your mortgage here: http://ratenerd.com/cant-pay-your-mortgage-1355

3. You have been through a lot - dont be shy about asking your kids or other family members for help with groceries, medical expenses etc.

Good luck - I also suggest that all seniors living alone get a medical alert system in the event of emergency.

Jeanine,

PLEASE follow RateNerd's recommendations. Step one is critical and make take a while but you must do it, so get crackin' and begin to connect with local folk that can address your specific needs. Options differ geographically so begin to network with the good souls who are your neighbors.

I think you've enough information to find local helpers. If I can help be in touch. Understand no one knows where you are so can't point you to specific sources.
