There are many solvents.  Water is a solvent.  Nail polish remover contains acetone, and it can also be used for removing sticky labels.  Turpentine or mineral spirits is used to remove pine sap. 

Dry cleaning uses solvents like perchloroethylene (perc).  Trichloroethylene is used in industry for degreasing.
