What products are a solvent?

There are many solvents.  Water is a solvent.  Nail polish remover contains acetone, and it can also be used for removing sticky labels.  Turpentine or mineral spirits is used to remove pine sap. 

Dry cleaning uses solvents like perchloroethylene (perc).  Trichloroethylene is used in industry for degreasing.

Products that contain solvents include paint, ink, coatings, household cleaners, dry cleaning fluid, spot removers, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, nail polish remover, microelectronics, automotive products, metal and vapor degreasers, paint strippers and thinners, refrigerants, foam-blowing agents, and coolants.

We have five PRIMARY categories of solutions.  They are:

Polar solutions (using a polar solvent and ionic solute).  NaCl*H(2)0 is one example.

Non-polar solutions (using a nonpolar solvent and a nonpolar solute) such as automotive paint. 

Emulsions (polar solvent holding a non-polar solvent in solution using electromagnetic properties of both to maintain the emulsion).  Examples include milk and water-based paint.

Colloids (polar solvent and nonpolar solid held in an electrostatic suspension).  Example: gelatine.

Alloys (non-bonded metals mixed while molten and allowed to freeze).  Example: brass.

Blended igneous rock (one variety of crystalline silicate with epitaxial "boundary regions" wherein the rock forms an inhomegenous mix).  Eaxmple: granite.

Plasmids.  While not a "conventional" solution, this state uses one plasma to hold another plasma in "solution."  Examples: beta*e- in the core of the sun, gamma radiation (e+/e-) in space.
