Requirements vary by state.  In California it takes 6,000 hours, or about 3 years fulltime work, under a licensed investigator to be eligible to take the state-issued exam.  You do get credit for hours if you come from a law enforcement , law,or other background, say investigative journalism, related to the investigations.
