I will add some to what PGroot said.
Start - Control Panel - Open your printer Icon - see if it has a check mark for - Set as default printer.
If your having driver problems, what I have done on a couple of printers is - Wait until you get on the Internet and than turn your printer on and give it time to search for a driver.
Their is also the Trouble Shooter that can get it to search for a driver. It's been to long to remember the exact wording for this step.
