Depends on to whom you are giving it and what is the occasion.

Everyone loves a gift beautifully wrapped.

Professionally if you are not good at it.

Consider the occasion (if there is one).  Gifting occasions include Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, childbirth, house warmings, and believe it or not, funerals.  There is no comprehensive list for good times to present gifts.

It is far more important to honor the occasion than to spend hugely.  Make it something the person would never buy for himself but will use.  A paid "Life Alert" system for a disabled shut-in can make the difference between life and death. 

Solace and love are contagious: this is one condition you WANT to catch!
