There are some books on this; some have started signing with babies as early as one year old, starting with just a few items at first.  Some of the books even have their own signs to use instead of standard sign language ... designed just for parent children signing.  Babies can learn it and use it sooner than they can learn to speak and some doctors say that makes it wonderful, as they say the baby can know what they want or what they want to communicate well before they can speak and that that is very frustrating for the baby and that signing relieves that frustration by letting them communicate sooner.

I've seen the results with children under 2 and it's amazing how well then can learn to sign and to understand the parents signing.   I forget the authors, but could get them for you if you can't find them, with a phone call.    But those books are in the bookstores if you go look.

good luck,

Babies start watching and absorbing signs very early!  My grandbaby is 9 months old and stops everything when we sign, my son is deaf. He is fascinated with sign language! If you start exposing your baby early and doing things such as signing "more" when you give him/her more of his favorite treats, etc , he will pick up on this very early.  Do the same with milk and please, thank you, mama, Daddy.  Those are some easy signs.  You can add as your baby progresses.  I think 12 to 14 months, your baby will sign back to you if you are consistent!  My baby did!  Good luck!
