I have to ask why you are removing the drain. Is there any access to the bottom of the unit? There is usually a locknut that holds the drain to the fixture.

I have access from the crawlspace underneath the drain. I do not see a locknut, I see just a copper fitting going into a copper drain pipe.

There may be a screw connection (3) from the top when you remove the strainer. Are you replacing the shower?

There is not. I also puting pliers in the strainer and trying to turn it. It will not budge.

I asked a friend of mine about your problem, this is what he told me. the drain in the shower, does the flange around the drain look like it can be screwed off, he told me it screwed on by the flange I hope this helps you

You need to access it from below disconnect the trap and then remove the large nut under the base.

You can accomplish anything you put your mind to.

If you dont see a nut on the bottom then either the whole metal cage on the bottom will spin off or the top flange inside the base will spin off  you will need a special wrench to hold the drain.
