FALSE...A basket strainer is the drain in a kitchen sink or any large mouth drain.

You are talking about a mesh filter that fits into or over the top of the gutter's downspout.  They can keep small amounts of debris from blocking the downspout, at least for a while, between cleanings.  If the gutter gets too full, though, the mesh will become blocked causing the gutter to overflow.

Unless you live in an area with no trees nearby your house, these can be helpful and much less labor intensive and less expensive than gutter covers (though you will still need to clean the gutters).

Sometimes, people install these devices underneath a gutter cover system to delay cleaning, since most gutter covers do allow some debris to enter, though it could take quite a few years for a blockage to occur.

A basket strainer go's in the bottom of the sink to keep things from washing down the drain. Hair, food, and anything that's not water will catch in the strainer to be thrown away.

Just another tricky day!

there is two ways to look at how you phrased the question. if you meant basket strainers- which is an actual plumbing fitting or device- then Mrplmr is correct. if you meant it how you typed it--basket/strainers which is an either or possibility, then natural handyman is correct because you would put a basket shaped strainer -usually made of mesh similar to a wash machine discharge strainer- into the downspout opening to collect debris.Surprised

false - you'll find them in the Kitchen Sink.

P.S. if you put a mesh strainer over your downspout opening it will more than likely block up with leaves etc. quickly. though keeping the sewer free of leaves etc. it will greatly deminish the effectiveness of your downspout.

I don't know why none of you guys have the correct answer - 'basket strainers' can apply to a number of similar items, and here ( Canada) they are also conical plastic strainers about 2" high that fit in the tops of downspouts. -yes they do sometimes clog up, but the holes are about 1/2x1/2 and clear fairly quickly as leaves disintegrate.Smile

What is truth -
