Where is the proper location for a lapel pin on a man's suit coat?

On the lapel.  If the suit doesn't have a lapel, or the lapel is too small for it to look right, on the pocket.

On the left normally, but sometimes the center for large or gaudy pins or patches.  Both above the breast(s), almost in line with the shoulder, but not too high.

But on which side of the suit?  On the left (heart side) or on the right?

Left side.  Usually this is the side the pocket is on, also, and any monograms.

Thank you.  In addition since posting that query, I found out there is a law, the U.S. Flag Code (I think that is the name) that specifies the flag pin should be worn on the "heart side" of the jacket -- or, as you said, on the left side.

For me the best location to place your custom lapel pins is on your necktie or on your pocket but make sure people can see it =)
