Since a proton has a positive charge of 1, you add 1 to the atomic number of carbon.

Carbon has an atomic number of 6. Nitrogen has an atomic number of 7.
If you add a proton to a carbon nucleus you get a nitrogen nucleus assuming the nucleus doesn't split into smaller nucleii.
