If the pharmacist is not familiar with the Dr and the Dr has no DEA #, if the prescription is from an out of state dr and they can not confirm the Doctor saw the patient face to face. They will not fill prescription. These are the rules from the State Board of Pharmacy in Tennessee not sure about other state board rules.

Here in Texas, a controlled prescription cannot be transferred across state lines so the pharmacist would not be able to fill or transfer this type of prescription. Another reason would be that something has occurred that involved the Dr. and therefore, the pharmacist would refuse to fill any scripts from that Dr. I currently work in a pharmacy and we will not fill for certain doctors offices because they will not provide us with the proper information (DPS # and DEA # and copy of license etc...) so that we can validate the doctor is still licensed and allowed to write prescriptions. We also have situations where the doctor is not physically there but prescriptions are being given with the Dr's signature. We have also run across a couple of clinics where they used doctors names that licenses had expired or was actually practicing at another clinic and the doctor did not know that their name was being used. So, there are really many different reasons why a pharmacy would deny filling a particular doctors scripts.

the doctor may be prescribing incorrect dosage and strength, doctor may be writing for too many scheduled drugs, doctor may be under investigation for illegal prescribing

Thanks so much for your prompt, courteous assistance. I found so much helpful information from Northern California and Washington State but kept running into lengthy, repeated, fruitless searches in my own county. Thanks again - S/Flipfish
