Hi , They recognize 173 Breeds . 

 They added 3 news ones just this past May .

There are 170 Complete List of AKC Recognized Breeds and
              15    Miscellaneous Class Breeds

Wood chips can be dangerous.....Straw gets wet and mildewed.I like a washable kennel mat. In winter I include a sleeping bag purchased from used clothing stores like Goodwill etc. They eventually tear them up so I throw away and get another.
