Why does my one dog attack my other dog and how do I stop it? I have a 6 yr old Yorkie and a 12 yr old schnauzer. I have had the Yorkie from birth and the Schnauzer(a rescue dog) 4 years. About 2 years ago the Yorkie started to periodically jump and attack the other dog. No provocation. She never attacks other dogs. How do I change this behavior.
I think this may be a jealusy issue. If you had your yorkie first, the yorkie may be more protective of you and jealous.
There IS provocation. You are just not seeing it. Dogs talk with body language. A look, the position of ears, tail and posture all tell you something. I'm still learning but there have been some big fights in my house that scared the pants off me.
Please, this is not a training issue. It is a behavior issue. Watch about ten episodes of "Dog Whisperer". Heck it took me more than that but he explains it better than anyone I've ever heard. He's on the National Geographic Channel.
And the answer to how you change the behavior is changing YOU and how you deal with your dogs. They are fighting for dominance because you do not provide it. I know you probably think you do but us humans are slow learners sometimes. We keep communicating with words instead of body language but once you really get it you won't ever have a problem with any dogs again (-:
