NEVER raise your voice to a dog when it's barking...it thinks YOU are barking.  I have two Maltese pups and I have spoken firmly "no" to them when I don't like something they are doing.  When they bark...all I have to do is "shhhhhhhhhh" like when you want someone to be quiet in a library.  No matter what is going on...once I say "shhhhhhhh..."  they get quiet.  My husband had a dog though...named Blue and he was deaf..I couldn't do that with him...he lived outside...since we live on a lake...he loved to run down and cool off in the lake...when someone came up in the yard or something set him off...I would just take a small glass of water <water cooled him off> and threw it towards him.  He got my drift.

The most important thing when you are training a child...is to be consistent.  If you don't follow your training procedure ALL THE TIME...your dog will never learn what he can and can't do.

I believe you need to nip this in the bud right away. Just raise your voice a bit and say "NO", when he does it. He will learn after a bit that he is not supposed to do this. Praise him when he does not nip.
