I have a 8 month old girl rottie she can be lovely but these behaviours happen every day, if i touch her 9 times out of ten she will make a awful growley barking noise and grip my arm and will only let go after being told a few time, another thing she does is if im walking through the lounge she will jump up and grip my arm making the same noise and not letting go, she is walked 3 times a day and has company all day and evening. what does this mean?

It means that she thinks she is the boss of you. You must assert yourself as the pack leader.

I am sending your question to a friend who has Rotties. She may have more specific advice for you.

Hi Lauren and hi LR...and LR,  thanks for the invite to this question.

LR is right.  Your dog is the pack leader.  She isn't confused here...no offense, but it's the human that gets the role mixed up when it comes to our canine friends.  The dog clearly has assumed its position.

Because Rotties are so big, they must be kept under control at all times.  In this case, I would suggest starting back at the beginning.  You must establish your role as the pack leader.

Begin with some simple steps.  Food and water should be given by you and the dog is allowed to take it only when you give the okay command.  The same goes for any toys or treats.  When you walk the dog, never let it lead the way.  You go out the door first (and in) and then give the okay command for the dog to follow.  The key word here is 'follow.'  Only when the command is given do you allow the dog to enter or exit.  Repeat often, even if it requires only going in and out of the door until the dog unstands and respects your commands.  Never allow the dog to jump on you or anyone else.  If it does, when it jumps bring your knee straight up (blocking the dog) and give a firm DOWN command.

Do not allow the dog to 'mouth' you at any time.  I would suggest buying some bitter apple spray and applying it to your arm while you are training the dog.  You can find it at any pet store or supply.  Do not allow the dog to growl at you.  A firm NO command should be given each and every time this happens and you should give a SIT and STAY command and make the dog comply.  It will take some practice but with patience, she will change her behavior.

Keep in mind that a Rottweiler typically matures at a slow pace, even though they look full grown.  It's not unusual for them to remain 'puppies' in their heads until age 3 or 4.

Stay with your commands and demand that every family member or friend who interacts with the dog does the same.  If they don't...you maintain control.  You need to get this dog under your control now because as you see, they get very large, very quickly.

I would suggest that you pick up a book on the breed if this is your first, or a training magazine (available at Petsmart or one of the chains) and start working with your Rottie on a daily basis, even if it's only 15 minutes per day.  This is a working breed so they love training and you will gain the respect of the dog by engaging it.

Also, if you haven't watched The Dog Whisperer (Cesar Millan), give it a try.  He's great with dogs and has a particular love of Rotties and Pit Bulls.  He provides a lot of pack leader information in his program and you can watch particular episodes on hulu.com for free.

I'm going to send this to another friend on this site who is a 'dog whisperer' in her own right.  She's sure to have some great advice for you.

The main thing is, don't give up and don't give in. Good luck!

Thankyou for your advice this has been a great help.

You're quite welcome, Lauren.  I hope so and you can do this!  Best of luck to you and your Rottie.  It's just a bad habit that she's picked up that needs to be broken immediately.  Keep us informed!

I agree with Jada. In order to control your dog, you need to be the pack leader and be assertive and calm as well. You can also consult the vets from http://petnvetfinder.com who will be able to guide you with the tips on how to control your dog if he/she pull you around when you take him out for a walk or bark at other dogs.
