My pet rat has been listless and when I was scratching his head today, little worms starting appearing. they are very tiny and go away when I stop scratching.

OMG! If my rats had anything live coming out of them I would freak! You need to contact a small animal specialist Vet ASAP. There are animal diseases and bugs that can harm humans. What has it been in contact with to get bugs? Whatever you do, do NOT release this animal into the wild. If it happens to die before contacting a vet do NOT throw it away-it may need to be disposed of through your local Health Department depending on what it has. If you can't find a small animal vet, call a vet- they know specialists in your area. If all else fails, get a hold of the Humane Society they can do both medical and if need be disposal.
