Here we use glass shakers with chrome tops -- about the most ordinary shakers you could imagine.  That way if they get broken it isn't hard to order more of them. 

Pepper shakers just need a toothpick through the holes once in awhile.  Salt shakers can rust solid and you have to replace the caps.
