Overland trip through america

I am planning to spend a few months travelling through America in july, starting in new york and finishing in LA. I don't really ant to do a fullscale structured tour (contiki -esque). I do not drive and was thinking over going overland as it will be cheaper than flying. Has anyone got any advice as to what they have done or suggest?

If you are interested in traveling by train I would recommend Amtrak. You can start by going to their web site.
