Ovarian Cancer

My Mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 6 months ago and has been receiving chemo theropy treatments 4 times a month. When she was first diaagnosed her CA 125 blood test was 3100. Her most recent CA 125 test has dropped to 18. I am told this is very good news. My question I guess is: What do these test results mean excactly and how good is this news?

The CA 125 is controversial, because many people falsely believe that it can detect Ovarian Cancer in an early stage.  It is not particularly accurate in that regard, but it is a good gauge as to the treatment progress of an Ovarian Cancer patient.

CA 125 is a protein that is produced in large amounts by Cancer cells.  The more CA 125 in a test sample = the more thriving Cancer cells in the patient.  Accordingly, a low CA 125 count suggests that the Cancer is regressing.

I wish your mother health & success.  I lost my own mother to Ovarian Cancer, and my big sister had it too, but she is a 23-year survivor.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Your Mum is doing really well! In layman terms, cla125 is a protein that is made by the cancer cells. If chemo is working, it kills off the cells, therefore yr count should be lower. A healthy person typically has between 10-35 according to my Mum's consultant.
