Why is my outdoor compressor frozen. The Ac unit ...

Why is my outdoor compressor frozen.  The Ac unit is fine on warm days but when it gets hot, it freezes-up.  I have a three story home with thremostats at each floor.  BUT I only have one return duct.  It seems as though the system does not move enough air to the bedrooms.  The common area )open three story stairwell and open living level at each level gets cooler than the bedrooms.  I noticed that there are NO returns in the bedrooms.  So when the bedroom doors are closed is it blocking the flow of air and causing the unit to move less air, thus freezing the cooling fins in the house and outside?

Replacing an existing system about 6 hours at roughly $85 an hour, $510. Adding ac to a house that did not have it can be all over the board. Probably in the neighboorhood of $1-$2 per square foot. This is just labor, parts would be additional ac compressor

My ac unit motor outside does not turn on but the rest of inside unit

Check your circuit breaker for the compressor unit. If okay, it may be the capacitor on the compressor unit (about $100 plus labor to fix). Worked for me.

there are several things to consider, air flow capacity of the furnace and duct size, along with square footage of the space being cooled. these along with where you live, north or south are factors in the size of your particular system. it may work but it isn't recommended to mismatch equipment.
