I can tell you that I had two employees who received an evaluation below their expectations. One took it very hard, was greatly offended, and after a few months left. The other one decided she could show us all that we had made a mistake, and indeed by the following year everybody reassessed her value.

I'm not saying you have to "prove yourself". Some places  are just not suitable for certain people and it doesn't say they're bad people. If you feel you're under appreciated, wither take actions to change that, or find a place that better suits you.
