Unless it's a first night nobody dresses up any more for the opera, not even at "La Scala" smart casual will be fine.

I wore a nice cocktail dress but some ladies dressed more casual.

Where what you'd like : ) ! You can get really dressed up and it will work and you can go casually and it will work as well.
