Old cat is getting very thin

My cat will be celebrating his 18th birthday in a couple of months time. A couple of days ago I noticed that he has become very thin. He was never a very large or a very fat cat, but now I can feel his bones very clearly whenever I stroke him. I don't think that he is eating less, and he doesn't seem to be suffering.

I've never had a cat this old before, and I don't know if this is normal. I know that he hates going to the vet, and I would prefer to spare him the unpleasantness if I can

Just like people when we get old and near death. If you see him eat then you know he isn't starving. Maybe a change in food might interest him? Cat's usually go off somewhere to die so if he is a in and out cat he might not come home one day.
