There is a rare genetic condition called hyperkalemic periodic paralysis where elevated potassium in the blood can cause muscle weakness and spasm.  This is where physical therapy may be helpful to the patient.  http://www.best4health.net

elevated potassium can lead to irregular heart rhythm and kidney problems.  Potassium levels too high or too low need to be corrected without stressing the cardiac and kidney systems; your facility should have guidelines as to what levels whether low or high puts your patient at greater risk.
