Thank goodness!

In that case, if you want to call your friends by a nickname (and they do not already have nicknames that they use), then go with whatever feels right to you (as long as they don't have any objection).

Nicknames can be shorter or longer than the person's original name - they can reflect the person's original name, or the way s/he looks, or acts or what hobbies s/he likes.

I'd suggest you not 'think' so much about it; you may find that a nickname will just flow off of your tongue when you least expect it.

For example, my given name is Julie, but most of my friends always ended up calling me 'Jules.' No prompting from me, no knowledge of other friends who were already calling me 'Jules,' just something each person came up with at some point in time. You may find the same thing happens to you and your friends.

Are you pregnant? Or just thinking ahead?

Either way, I personally prefer more normal names (and nicknames) to the off the wall, oddly spelled and 'unique' apellations many parents now bestow upon their children.

You might look in a standard 'Baby Names' book, most will list nicknames right next to the 'full length' version of your name of choice.

P.S. Other things to consider are:

~ Does the baby's first name seem to 'go with' the last name? Obviously at odds names (Mordecai Sanchez, for example) just don't work.

~ Do the baby's initials spell something when placed together? (Priscilla Irene Grant spells PIG - would you want to be saddled with something like that?)

~ Do the first and last names run together when said aloud? (Scott Tan, for example. Your child will have to get used to speaking slowly and repeating himself.)

~ Has the name (or nickname) you are considering been done to death? How many Madison Rose Whatever-the-last-name-is can there be? Names that are too popular are easily dated - and copied.

~ Are you naming your child after a celebrity? Do you really want to do that? How many other people will have the same exact idea? In a few years, your child will be in school. Do you really want her to be one of ten Britney's in her class?

~ How will your child's name or nickname sound when he or she is an adult? If your child's given name is Thomas, but everyone calls him 'Bubba,' what kind of an adult do you picture when you hear that name? Is that what you want for your child?

~ Think of the worst baby name you have ever heard (or a normal name, but one that has been spelled so oddly that you'd never guess it correctly). What is your opinion of those parents? Do you think they are intelligent? Well educated? Classy?

Odds are, you do not. Names may not be a true reflection of your abilities or intelligence (or those of your child), but people's PERCEPTIONS may say otherwise. Is that what you want for your child?

Bottom line, you can name your child anything you like. Just do your child a favor and think it through before you saddle him or her with anything too 'unique' as a first name. Toss that 'beautiful' name in the middle, instead. Chances are, s/he will thank you for it.

My nickname now is Ri, and my friend Melinda's nickname is Ellie. I think those are cute nicknames. Thank you all.
