Is it really necessary to give out blu-ray DVD? I am not current in technology and regular DVDs are fine with me. Should I just give out gift certificate to places where people can buy the movies themselves?

Most people haven't gotten Bluray yet. And, like me, probably won't until the DVDs and players stop being 2 or 3 times more expensive than the regular ones. Gift certificates are always good for me.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then that makes me a burning truck filled with TNT hurtling through a rocket fuel depot.

Yes, most new DVD releases 2011 will be equipped with Blu-ray DVD combo pack type information. This is the best way to go to increase the popularity of Blu-ray.

By the time you get a set up for Blu-ray they will make it obsolete

The answer is kinda both yes and no... What you might be thinking about is of late, Disney has been including a Bluray disk and a traditional DVD in their "Combo" packs, so No you can't play the Bluray but yes if you bought the Bluray/DVD combo pack you can play the DVD in a traditional player.
