I never know whether to buy a practical present for a new baby, or something they can keep as they grow older. Which do you think is better? Does it depend on what the parents need?

If the parents need the basics, then go that route.  If the parents have the basics then you can splurge on the non-essentials.  You need to give the gift you want to give.

Not knowing your relationship with the baby, I will assume this is a gift for the baby of friends.  A blanket, one that will last a very long time is wonderful.  Toys come and go unless you choose a vintage model the little one could appreciate in the years ahead.  If you are a crafty person, personalize the gift for the little one with your best wishes for the future.

It is a new life, celebrate it.
