1063? Holy crap, dude. You're lucky to be alive. Seriously. Yes, diabetes causes many problems, among them mood swings and depression. I urge you to watch yourself lest you lose it and yell at someone you shouldn't. Believe me, I know. Get your doctor to put you on Metformin morning and night, and Lantus if you can afford it. It's worked excellently for me in controlling the diabetes. Though my blood sugar crisis wasn't even half as high as yours. I can't believe you didn't die. Take this stuff seriously and work hard to keep it under control. Diabetes can kill you in several different ways. And I bet no one's talked to you in depth about it yet. Hospitals aren't real good at explaining things.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, then that makes me a burning truck filled with TNT hurtling through a rocket fuel depot.

The problem with your eyes could be one of two things. Diabetic retinopathy which can't be cured. Or Cataracts, which can be. I was incredibly lucky, I had cataracts.

Dan, I would question not only the test, but the facility that administered it.  Blood glucose in excess of 1,000 mg/dl is pure sugar -- discounting even the presence of water.  1,063 mg/dl sugar is 106.3% sugar -- an impossibility.

I could believe 106.3 mg/dl serum glucose, which is low normal for fasting blood sugar.

Diabetic retinopathy usually comes well after assorted diabetic neuropathies.  Usually one will suffer severe ketoacidosis and serum glocose problems before suffering eye problems.

I suggest that you find a competent physician, very quickly.

Have you checked your medical benefits since Obamacare?

Dan, once you get your blood sugar under control, your eyesight should return to normal.  If you continue to have high blood sugar levels for a long time, then yes, you can develope retinopathy.  At this point, since you are newly diagnosed, the changes in your eyesight are temporary.  But, you need to get your sugars under control.  I have never heard of a BS that high.  My highest, when I was a younger and my mother had died, was 900.  Yes, I was a mess.  Diabetes is a process and yes, it really changes your life.  The more honest you aqre, the better off you will be.  I am going to assume you are on Lantis and Humulin or Humalog?  You need to test your glucose several times a day and I mean about 8 times a day until you get used to the way your body feels.  You need to learn about counting carbohydrates so you can give yourself insulin correctly.  You also need to find a support group where you can go and talk about the issues you are having.  That will help with the depression and the lonliness.  Many people feel the same way that you do.  Call your local hospital and ask about Diabetes Support Groups.  I recommend subscribing to ADA Forecast magazine and you need to do some research on the computer.  The more information you have, the easier this will all be.

I know this is really hard, so I wish you nothing but the best.
