Do I need Java on my computer,, will it hurt to uninstall

Java by Sun what is it!  I have this on my computer.  Do I need this? What does it do?   Can I uninstall?  I already have Windows XP, Internet Explorer, Adobe.  This computer is for personal use I do not do spreadsheets etc. just explore the internet for info and e-mail friends.  My desktop is seven years old so it takes a long time to upload changes.  Getting ready to install new ram.  Thanks

Certain websites require JAVA to be installed to be viewed correctly. Microsoft used to supply JAVA in all window based computers but has since stopped doing so, now it is necessary to add yourself.

If you use the internet a lot for searching, then I think JAVA is a necessary component.

Thanks!  I just installed more RAM in my desktop so I will download Java back into my system.  With just 256 MB in the old desk top Java seemed to be slowing me down.   I do not have Java on my lap top, I guess I haven't needed it for any info I have been looking for.
