The character in question is, most likely, John Mannering, The Baron, an Englishman. He is a former jewel thief turned good guy who owns an antique store and travels the world with his wife, Lorna. They travel about investigating jewel, art or antiques related mysteries. The author is famed mystery writer, John Creasey. There was a shortlived TV series in the mid 1960s starring the American actor, Steve Forrest.
