The title "return of the Jedi" refers to who?
I say it's Luke, returning from Yoda training. My son says it's Darth Vader.
I guess it's a matter of personal interpretation. Mine has always been that the title refers to the Jedi as an order, an ideology, and not as a specific member of that order, that starts to reclaim its previous status. That interpretation was so intuitive for me, that I simply never thought about the two possibilities you and your son thought of. These two also strike me as logical options, though your son's opinion sounds slightly more plausible to me.
Roee articulates the matter perfectly...
I guess I don't really care
George Lucas said it refers to Anakin.
Its a little of both as Luke is trained with yoda "bringing back"the jedi from the Great Purge and Darth Vader brings balance to the Force by rdeming himself, benefiting the same cause.
i heard the original title was supposed to be revenge of the jedi i.e. Luke Skywalker - but the movie gods decreed this would be to violent for kids so to get them in the cinemas it was re-titled return of the jedi
i don't believe it refers to anakin 'cause in my opinion lucas originally only wrote one star wars film, seen the potential and wrote another one splitting it in two ( the empire strikes back & return of the jedi ) and many many years later thought 'how can i make some more money' and copied the first three ( and yes, i do mean copied ) but called them episodes 1,2 &3........yeah right!
