Is the Miss Universe pageant sexist? Right Celebrity explains that
Here's an
I think any competition judging women (or men) for just their outside appearance and is so superficial is stupid and not worth a mention. In the case of Miss Universe, it's quite clear that the competition is held only to satisfy men's desires to see beautiful woman without bothering to notice anything else about them. It is absolutely sexist and very disturbing.
Certainly such "competitions" are stupid and demeaning. I cannot imagine ANY self possessed, intelligent young woman WISHING to be involved, but the evidence is quite clear that such events are the Life's Goal for many young women.
Given that the YOUNG WOMEN make the choice to compete and are not forced, by definition, such things cannot be "sexist"
I do, wholeheartedly agree with Paige, that such "cattle shows" are EXTREMELY disturbing and reflect VERY poorly on our society and on the self image/esteem of our young women.
Woman need to breakthrough and realize the corporate world is open to them. They can affect more change economically. Even if you don't start and or run a business, you vote with you wallet on causes you support and stand for. For example if you're against outdated animal testing for standard chemicals then don't buy all those silly cosmetics or support those big fashion labels.
Ironically the person who runs the Miss Universe programs does so purely for profit - TV rights contracts. That person is none other than the superficial Donald Trump.
It isn't really a surprise when some incompetent people branch out into other 'ideas' that are just sillier than their original business.
If you think these beauty pageants are good then ask yourself this simple question: has there been some improvement in the state of international affairs like poverty and viruses such as in Africa?
Maybe one day we'll hear about how some Miss Universe winner 'raised awareness' for some cause and found a solution to it! Yeah like in 2080.
Seriously now, beauty pageants are an inefficient way of reaching there goals. They should spend the millions of dollars in advertising and fake TV drama's into real investment programs dealing with self-esteem, drugs and alcohol.
The goal of any beauty pageant is not to solve major issues in the world. It is a competition. I have serious concerns about men and women who protest against beauty pageants. I think they must have incredibly low self-esteem. Is not the woman's movement all about personal choice? Well, women are not forced to enter these pageants. I enjoy them. They are entertaining, and to the person who posted above: The Miss Universe Pageant is co-owed by Donald Trump AND NBC. It's the original reality show.
You never hear these kind of complaints about the Mr.Universe competition. Men have just as many body insecurities as women.
You could argue exactly the same thing about quiz shows lowering the self-esteem of people with low IQs and not showing anything about the person than how smart they are. You might think think these girls have no skill and are just genetically gifted but they work really hard to stay in shape, exercising, controlling what they eat etc.
You wouldn't say these things to a models face would you? If you're willing to tell someone that their dreams and ambitions a stupid and immoral and degrading to their sex then you're pretty sick. I've met models male and female and most have been extremely intelligent.
These things aren't my cup of tea but if you enjoy it watch it. If you don't change the channel.
