Meta and Description Tags?

It is really important to use these tags although now Google is giving preference to meta description but both are important to let search engines know about your site keywords and theme.

The answer to your question depends on which search engine you are talking about.  Each search engine uses it's own algorithm with it's own unique formula in it.  Sanny's answer above is correct, but only if you're speaking exclusively of Google.  

One more thing.  Just because things are the way they are today doesn't mean the answer will be the same as it will be tomorrow.  An SEO expert can only tell you what his or her experience has shown them up to that point; the rules can all change tomorrow at the whim of the search engines.  Such is the nature of our business.

But for different reasons. If you have a relevant META Description, Google will often use this as a snippet for a search result instead of creating it's own snippet out of page content. This creates a perfect opportunity to write a sales oriented snippet for the user.

Remember, meta description tags is important in your site cause it is the one being read by the search engine crawlers. No matter how fascinating your content may be, as long as you do not have meta tags on it, it will not be read and appear as a result in search engines.

Actually meta keyword tags are irrelevant now a days.Search engines are not supported it any more.It gives list of your targeted keywords to your competitor very easily.Instead of using meta tag keyword use meta tag description.Use your specific keyword phrase just once within the description tag.

Now a days google dont give much value to meta keyword tag as people started misusing it but description tag is still important. But in some search engines both of these tags are given equal importance. So you should include them in your pages.
