Why are the message boards being replaced by this inferior replacement?.....does AOL WANT to lose more customers?

Because they want an improved experience for us long time AOL members so stop asking such stupid questions!

Apparently they want to lose some customers. Wl is right.

 It's in part due to the nasty people who ABUSED the message boards. I for one, think this is well deserved in coming to the trolls, liars, cyber harassers and stalkers. A fitting end to those who took a good forum and turned it into a nasty stew of lying, attacking and posting of personal information and photos (gotten through stalking online.) Sorry for the few who used the forum as they meant to be used but, NOT sorry to the troll asses who now whine and moan about it. To them I say HAHAHAHA! deal with it.
