Thanks Dripbydrip - I understand your feelings exactly. But as a doctor myself with an interest (and a blog about) blood pressure problems - I do receive lots of emails asking questions.

I try to answer as many as I can but time is precious and I often wonder if those who ask would still send the emails if they had to pay for the reply !

I don't have strong views either way - just wondering what others think.

Thanks for your reply

I'm a medic with a special interest in Blood Pressure Treatment with a particular focus on low blood pressure symptoms and treatment . Treatment for shoulder pain and joint pain also takes up most of my working day.

I am wondering if there is any treatment for patients with high triglycerides (typically 300-500) that do not respond to traditional medicines. I have been under the care of a specialist who has advised me that there’s nothing else he can do for me. I have seen ads for over the counter treatments like Nialor that are touted to be effective in lowering triglycerides and wonder what the view is of such remedies. I am 52, 20% overweight, my cholesterol is typically 200-250 and my liver enzymes are typically 10-20% above normal range. I swim laps for 40 minutes at least 300 days each year and have cut cholesterol, fat, sugar and alcohol intake significantly in recent years.

None of these measures have reduced my readings although I feel much healthier. I have tried a range of statins, fibrates and bile sequestrants over the past few years, including Gemfibrozil, Tricor, Zocor, Niaspan, Zetia, Crestor, Colestid and even Policosanol. None of these have brought my triglycerides into the normal range, and I’ve had adverse reactions such as muscle weakness to the statins. I note that to my doctor’s amazement, Niaspan actually lowered my liver enzymes into the normal range, but didn’t bring my triglycerides under 300.

Are there any other treatments or medications I should try?

Hi,

Thank You.

You need to be careful when taking advice from websites about your medical health. Many people who post have no real expertise. However, seeing what other people have to say can help you determine if you have a similar problem, or may lead for research elsewhere. If you are ill I would recommend going to the doctor's office, or a medical spa.

In my experience, sites like justanswer.com, answer with non-related information. Specifically you ask them a lgeal question, involving medical negligence, they reply about what it would be in Texas and
California.

That in no way explains Florida Statues, wich were your original experience.

Therefore, after 3 attempts, I would have to be negative.

NO!! There's no way I would pay for online advice from a doctor. How do you know that he/she is really a doctor? This person knows nothing about me and all of my other health problems. Without an exam or history of ailments, I can not imagine anyone wanting to pay for services of this kind. I have had patients tell the doctor that they watch the MEDICAL CHANNEL and their diagnosis of a problem similar to hers, was totally different and she actually questioned the REAL doctor about his diagnosis. Upon telling the doctor this, it was a great laugh for us all. Brenda
