What does it mean to "rest on your laurels?"

In the ancient world winning athletes and other heroes and distinguished people were given wreaths of laurel leaves. If you are resting on your laurels you are relying on your past achievements.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
