If your kidney function is less than normal you may have chronic kidney disease. Of course it could be something temporary. Diabetics especially often develop protein in the urine, but protein can also indicate other diseases.

Your doctor should tell you whether you are in stage 2, 3, 4, or 5.  If you have a lab test with creatinine level you can determine GFR.
