There are several possible reasons:
1.  He wants to keep some communication lines open. 
2.  He wants to see your reaction.
3.  He is trying to hint: "I want to return".
4.  He is worried for your safety. 
5.  Wants to hint that he still cares (L.... ?) .
6.  He is missing you.
7.  Wants that you remain friends.
Since we don't know him we can only guess..... You know him better and sure be able to pick the right answer.
