Marines are all called "Devil Dogs" because the Germans named us that in Belleau Wood, Germany.  They said we fought like the hounds of hell.  That terrified the Germans into an early surrender at Versailles. 

Note that the hounds of hell also do the work of Heaven: Marine Corps Toys for Tots gives more cheer at Christmas than any other agency on the planet and is the only agency that reach where others cannot go.
