Maples need cold weather to produce sap.  As climate warms the zone where maples can produce sap moves north.  It is not whether sugar maples will become extinct, it is whether a particular farm can produce sap in quantities great enough to be commercial.

Politics has nothing to do with it, except climate change deniers will not be prepared to adapt.  Maple syrup production is already being affected by milder winters.

Expect less rainfall and more severe storms.  All forest ecosystems will be affected.  At this point, no one knows how or how much.

There ARE blights, and weird things have struck trees before. Tough to say. I would hope not...the black mold which I have seen does spread, but at this time there is more a chance of the Ash trees being taken out by a beetle than there is of the blight taking out the Maples...also, the Pine Weevil (another type of beetle) has been destroying the long needled pines around here...I doubt Maples will disappear anytime soon.
