The same reason my two Maltese pups bark at my daughter's boyfriend.  They KNOW who REALLY loves them.  You will have to tell your son's girlfriend all about his personality.  What he likes...what he doesn't like.  Try to make her visits a joy and welcome her calmly and quietly.  Let your dog go over to her in his own time. Make sure she has one of his treats to give to him...so he's happy when she comes.

He will accept her when he's ready...when he feels LOVED by her.

She's not part of his pack, his family.

I don't think this is about love.  I think it is about respect.  It is up to the owner of the dog to tell him to hush and go sit down.  The owner ( who should be the pack leader)  gets to set the rules.  One rule is that if I invite someone in my house, the dog better shush and act nice. One time I had a stranger step in my house uninvited and my dog lunged at him.  Good dog!  They know the difference.  When you invite someone in, the dog should be acting politely.  It is up to the owner to teach the rules to the dog.

Dogs have a way to sense if a person is good or bad. I suggest he change girl friends.
