40 pounds in 3 months is 3 pounds a week.  That's 10,500 calories a week that you need to burn, or 1500 calories per day.  If you weigh 200 pounds, you would have to run about 12 miles daily, and eat no more than 2000 calories.  If you are jogging at 4 mph, that's 3 hours.  Or you could run 8 miles and limit yourself to 1500 calories.  As you lose weight, you will have to run more miles to burn the same number of calories, and you will have to either reduce your calorie intake or run still more.

You're going to be hungry all the time.
