Log splitter trouble shooting

i have a (quick split log splitter) mfg by ge mann inc.cambellsport wis.its an older model apx 25 years old i have recently  changed the piston to a new  4" X 28" also new hydraulic lines and pump   the problem is it blows out hydraulic fluid out of the holding tank cap when returning.  at full cap. hold 3 1/2 gallons also when the piston  takes on pressure it completly stops and dangersly jumps forward and slams the splitting wedge any ideas why would help  ....could the tank be to full or maybe bad piston / pump  stuped  nj  thank you   jim
