What are some ways that construction comapnies use to make sure they don't hit buried wires, pipes, or other underground utilities?

sonic read outs, metal detectors, x-rays. most have schematic showing the direction and general vicinities. If you don't have access to these, digging by hand held shovel is the poor mans way.
