Actually I think they are great. They get a bad rap because people abuse them and take out to many loans and don't use it for what it is attended for like in an emergency.

For example i read one question in here where this girls cousin went around and applied for a bunch of payday loans all at the same time and then when it came time to pay them back the loan payments were bigger than his check.
