Is there a link between our food supply and colon cancer?

My dear mother-in-law succumbed to this disease a few short years ago and she was the epitome of health. She never drank, smoked or overindulged in much of anything. She was slender and looked great for her age. With the steady rise in colon cancer over the past ten years I am just curious as to the cause. Could our food itself be to blame?
