I saw that happen on a beautiful burgundy sofa that was only 14 months old.  The retail store it was purchased from gives a 1 year warranty and would not make it good.  Sometimes the materials used in manufacturing are not up to par.  Sometimes  the furniture simply wears out with use.  If the leather is in good shape, I would take it to an upholstery shop and get an opinion.
