My son is in some legal trouble. He's stolen from a department store but there isn't really any hard evidence. Any advice?

If he stole, then he has to pay the penalty and atone for his misdeeds, or he will never grow up to be a respectable adult.  If he didn't steal, then you need a lawyer.  In the U.S.A. a free lawyer is provided those who can not afford one for criminal trials.

Get him a good attorney for the legal trouble he's in. As for his punishment at home, you need to come up with some sort of punishment that will teach him that stealing is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Up until now, he has not learned this so be sure to make the punishment be REAL and something that he will remember if he tries to do something illegal again. It's important to remember that if you want your son to stay out of trouble, you need to make sure he realizes his crime is serious and this type of behavior can lead to worse crimes and eventually jail time.

This might seem like some strange advice but it is to tell him to "stop breaking the law"  i have gone into protection mode on my sons defence  on many, many occasions, age 16 to age 22 to be exact, and if I have learned one thing, it was that i had to stop coming to his defence. Stop protecting him! you know he did it, He knows he did it, If you keep bailing him out? thats all he would have been taught, was that "mommy" will come to my rescue.

I know this because my son has 6 felony charges of driving without a license.(period)  YES!  that's all, no more, I didn't say DUI or DWI...6 Felony charges of driving without a license!   Why 6? because I bailed him out of just about every one of those charges, so he never knew the real repercussions of his actions.

But now he does! My son finally got sentenced!  Because, the prosecuter was basically sick of seeing him in court, the judge got sick of seeing him, and the cops knew me on first name basis...(MOM)...  they got sick of arresting him. and I got sick of spending my our hard earned money on his stupidness,  only to have your heart broken for the ten thousandth time  "It get to you after a while".  Well, my son did 2 of a 2-5 year sentence "yes! NH. has very stiff driving laws" and came home in February. Did he learn his lesson?  pffff...NOPE! He got the driving bug again and was behind the wheel of his  friends grandmothers Hummer in August of 08.  YES! the August that just passed. My son will now finish his 2-5 year sentence with a new charge of,  Yes!, you guessed it, "driving without a license".  My son went to jail when he was 20, spent his 21st b-day in, woohoo...jail! he's now 23 and now I'll see him when??? oh, IDK, I'm not thinking about it much anymore, he calls me about every 3rd or 4th day or so,  He's worn me out.  My son built his first car when he was 15, got his license at 16 and it's been Hell since!                                                                                        Well, I know I rambled, But?  believe me, If you have the "NOT MY KID" attitude? You will have your heart broken too.  Oh! BTW? My son is a good kid too.
